Three people are in custody after being arrested in connection to a string of robberies in Independence.

According to police, officers were waiting outside of a 7-11 store at Sterling and 23rd Street early Thursday morning when Justin Epps, 22, and Devontae Spears, 19, walked into the store and robbed it at gunpoint.

When Epps came out of the store, police say he opened fire on police. A Kansas City, Missouri police officer returned fire, hitting Epps in the leg. He was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Spears attempted to flee the scene, but was apprehended by authorities. A third suspect, Tairre Matthews, 21, was arrested as she waited behind the wheel in the suspect's getaway vehicle.

The three suspects, all from Independence, are now in federal custody and charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Police are investigating whether the trio is responsible for any other robberies, but sources tell FOX 4 that the trio may be responsible for up to 15-20 robberies across the area.
