Group Pushes to Make Marijuana Legal in Missouri

Another push is underway to make pot legal in Missouri.¬† The pro-marijuana supporters are members of the the group “Show Me Cannabis.”

On Monday, the group got the green light from the Secretary of State’s Office in Jefferson City to begin circulating petitions to put two measures on the ballot. Measures that would make it legal for adults to buy Marijuana in a manner similar to purchasing alcohol. The measures would also allow medical use of marijuana with a doctor’s approval. The group says lawmakers should finally make it a law because supporters say too many teenagers are already getting their hands on pot illegally.

Opponents say the drug is physically addictive and will only encourage more young people to smoke it.

“Cannabis prohibition is a failed policy,” said Amber Langston with Show Me Cannabis. “We need to be redirecting out resources, our criminal justice resources toward much more important priorities.”

The group must collect a minimum of five percent of signatures from Missouri  voters in at least nine congressional districts to get the marijuana measures on the ballot by November, 2012.

Similar initiatives are expected to be on the ballot in five other states by November 2012, including California, Massachusetts, Colorado, Oregon and Washington.
