Memorial Service Set for Victims of Joplin Tornado
JOPLIN, Mo. – Six months to the day after a EF-5 tornado destroyed a large swath of town, residents in Joplin will be gathering on Tuesday to mark the occasion with a memorial service.
The service, set for 4:30 p.m., is set for Cunningham Park, which was destroyed in the May 22nd twister, which killed 161 people and caused billions of dollars in damage.
According to a report by FEMA, over $174 million in federal assistance has been given to Joplin, along with Jasper and Newton counties since the tornado hit. One of the key accomplishments so far include the removal of over 1.2 million yards of debris, along with temporary structures for two destroyed fire stations, a mobile hospital and more than 125 modular classrooms.
