SHAWNEE, Kan. -- Tuesday night, a Shawnee police officer stopped a double suicide in progress.

Officer Nick Shurmantine was finishing up his rounds for the night. He was in an area with a lot of copper thefts and decided he'd take one more look around. That's when he saw a car with a hose running from the exhaust into the car. He acted quickly and saved the two men inside.

"I think I was their guardian angel last night," Shurmantine said. "I think that's the reason. I was told in my head that I needed to do this."

The two men were taken to the hospital and they were conscious Tuesday night.  The men are 31-year-old twin brothers who had just celebrated their birthday on December 13.
