Ebenezer, the Donkey, that’s Stealing Hearts
GRANDVIEW, Mo. — Ebenezer is the talk of the town this Christmas. But this Ebenezer is a donkey in Grandview that just got his very own calendar.
“We have been shocked at how well his calendar has been received,” said Shirley Phillips, Ebenezer’s caregiver.
Phillips made the calendars as a way to raise awareness and money for Ebenezer. Phillips says when she found him, he had a serious hoof disease, a lung infection and was emaciated because his teeth had gone bad. While that’s all been fixed, she recently discovered a new problem.
“He would be down on the floor laying down and he wouldn’t get up,” said Phillips. “And we figured out his temperature was dropping down into the lower 90s, which is really dangerous because he could have hypothermia and he could die from that.”
So now the calendar will help pay for his new barn which will be heated to keep him warm as we head into winter.
“They spend a lot of time and take excellent care of him. It’s remarkable the recovery he has made,” said Rod May of May Milling Company.
May sells Ebenezer’s 2012 calendars. At first expected 100 orders. Now he’s preparing to sell more than 500.
“We’ve been inundated with calls for our calendar,” said May. “People call in from various places. Some have shipped to California and North Carolina. Just all over the country. There’s quite a demand for them.”
Which is surprising to even Shirley, who thinks the demand for Ebenezer’s calendar’s stems from his story of recovery and his kind heart.
“He doesn’t make any judgements,” said Phillips. “You don’t have to look a certain way, you don’t have to dress a certain way you don’t have to have a certain amount of money. He just loves everyone for who they are.”
Phillips hopes Ebenezer’s face serves as a daily reminder of that message to all of those who buy his calendar.
