Man Gets More Jail Time for Lawrence Homicide
LAWRENCE — A 32-year-old man was sentenced to serve 10 more years behind bars on Tuesday. Major Edwards, Jr., pleaded no contest, but was charged voluntary manslaughter in the death of his friend, Anthony Vital.
Edwards claims he did not fire the shot that killed Vital, but says another man, Durrell Jones, shot and killed Vital. Jones is already out of prison following a deadlocked jury at his murder trial. However, Edwards has been behind bars at the Douglas County Jail for more than three years.
Vital’s body was found in October of 2006. At that time, officers believed the death to be a homicide. Edwards claims that Jones was angry at Vital for not paying him owed drug money, shot and killed Vital in rural Douglas County.
