SHAWNEE, Kan. -- Three apartment fires, one of them deadly, in the space of just two weeks have Shawnee firefighters working on reminding people about the importance of fire prevention.
The most recent fire last week at Hampton Woods Apartments forced 40 people from their homes. Investigators say that because the wind-driven fire spread so quickly, they may never know the cause of the blaze.
Before that, fire damaged apartments at the Fox Run Apartments near 75th and Goddard. Before that, two people were killed when a fire caused by food left on a stove tore through the Carlysle Apartments.
Shawnee Fire Chief John Mattox says that his department will begin offering a town-hall meeting with residents where they will go over the basics of fire prevention.
Mattox says that his crews will begin the free seminars this week.
