JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. — Chatter on Facebook and Twitter about a possible fight on Friday at Fort Osage High School just outside Independence had many concerned as they headed to the school Friday morning.

FOX 4 has checked on these reports, and while we normally don’t report threats to avoid perpetuating them, we know parents and teachers were concerned about the rumors on Facebook and Twitter about the purported fight.

The Fort Osage School District tells FOX 4 that it asked Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies for extra coverage at the high school throughout the day to prevent any problems.

Stephanie Smith with Fort Osage Schools says the district takes all rumors seriously and activated their safety plan. Smith says the post stems from two groups of kids who aren’t getting along outside of school. Smith says the rumors about a gun at school are false.
