Tigers Beat Royals 4-3, Sweep Series
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After starting the season 3-2, the Kansas City Royals (3-9, 0-6 home) have now lost seven straight games.
The Detroit Tigers (9-3, 4-2 away) beat the Royals 4-3 on Wednesday night to complete a three game series sweep at Kauffman Stadium.
Former Missouri Tiger Max Scherzer (1-1, 7.98 ERA) got the win for Detroit.
Royals lefty Jonathan Sanchez (1-0, 6.39 ERA) went five innings, gave up two runs on four hits, walked three, and struck out three.
Royals reliever Jose Mijares (0-1, 3.38 ERA) got the loss.
In the third inning, Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar hit a two-run blast to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. Royals catcher Humberto Quintero pushed the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the fourth.
A wild pitch by Mijares scored Tigers catcher Gerald Laird in the seventh, and the game was tied 3-3. Two pitches later, Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder hit an RBI single and Detroit led 4-3.
Royals right fielder Jeff Francoeur hit into a double play to end the eighth, and Escobar hit into a double play to end the game in the ninth.
The Royals are till seeking their first home win of 2012. Luke Hochevar (1-1, 7.84 ERA) will start against Kyle Drabek (2-0, 1.42 ERA) and the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night at the K.
