Highway Worker Dies in Traffic Accident, Others Injured

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — One highway worker has died after an accident on eastbound I-64 in Illinois. A total of four highway workers and one driver were involved in the accident at a construction zone near the Fairview Heights Mall on Tuesday.

According KTVI in St. Louis, the Fairview Heights Fire Department chief said a black Honda was driving erratically on eastbound I-64. That car struck a pick-up truck, which hit the vehicle the workers were using. The driver of the black Honda had to be cut from the vehicle after the incident.

Two of the injured workers were airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital with life-threatening injuries — one of which has died. The extent of other injuries is not known at this time.

The workers are employees of Brightway Striping Services of New Baden, Illinois. They were working on a repaving project.
