KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City, Missouri, man faces assault charges after he allegedly shot another man in the face in a Lee’s Summit park over the weekend, prosecutors said on Monday.

Charles E. Preston, 20, faces assault and armed criminal action charges in connection to the shooting on Sunday morning at Legacy Park in Lee’s Summit.

According to police, the 19-year-old victim stated that he was contacted by a man who asked for help to find his lost dog. The victim drove the man to Legacy Park in search of the dog, where he then recognized the Preston as his current girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend.

Prosecutors allege that Preston exited the vehicle, shot the victim in the face through the windshield and then fled the scene on foot.

Preston has denied involvement in the shooting, prosecutors said. He was picked up by police about a mile from the scene of the shooting.

The incident occurred as several youth soccer games were happening nearby. Nobody else was injured in the shooting.
