LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. --  There were some scary moments out at a busy Lee's Summit sports complex Sunday morning, after a man shot another man in the face.

Crime scene tape criss-crossed a parking lot next to Legacy Park for much of the morning. Investigators honed in on a white pickup truck, where the victim was found.

"We thought it was glass and it wasn't, it was actually a shot and we saw the guy on the floor who got shot on the cheek," said Victoria Dominguez, who heard the gunshot.

Dominguez said she and her family were there for a soccer game, along with several other families.

"I thought it was crazy because we're coming out here to see a game with little kids and stuff. And then you're never expecting somebody is going to get shot in during the game," said Bryan Martinez, who also heard the gunshot.

Police said a 20-year-old man asked a 19-year-old man to meet him at the park in the morning.  They said the men do know each other.  But for some reason, the man who initiated the meeting, got in the truck and ended up shooting the other in the cheek once and then took off running.

"That's crazy to me. People pay a lot to be in the tournament and the don't have security," Dominguez said.

But police said there were several officers patrolling the area already. In fact, police caught the suspect less than a mile from the sporting venue on Blackwell Rd., south of Scruggs. Sgt. Mike Childs of the Lee's Summit Police Department said the shooting had nothing to do with the park or individuals there, and games went on uninterrupted.

"Though it's a tragedy that it happened here because we don't want anything like this happening anywhere within our city, it was isolated to a small area, and wrapped up rather quickly," Childs said.

Police have not yet released any names. Police say the victim was taken to a metro hospital and he does not have life-threatening injuries.  They say more information, possibly answers as to why this happened, will be obtained from the victim once he is medically able.
