KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A $21-million makeover is coming to a one-block area in the popular Westport entertainment district.
In 2013, construction crews will tear down the former “XO Club” at 3954 Central and begin building a new, environmentally-friendly, 118 unit apartment building. A former check cashing business at 3957 Broadway will be replaced with a 24-hour “Huddle House Restaurant” in August.
The Huddle House will be the first of the national franchise to come to the metro. Also, as part of the project, “Open Fire Pizza,” a wood-burning pizzeria, recently opened in a spacious, renovated building on Broadway. Co-developer Dr. Ahmed Awad said he and his partners are focusing on “family-friendly” businesses only.
“Many people associate Westport with the bar scene, the late night, but I also want them to feel that it’s also for families and that they can come out here whether it’s from school or the local people,” he said. “There is a place for them to come, hang out and enjoy themselves.”
Awad said in the future he and his team may also bring what they call a new, “Mini-Plaza” featuring affordable retail shops to Westport.
