Royals’ Fans Upset Over Player’s Actions
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A handful of Royals fans are upset with one its players. Humberto Quintero made a face behind Bruce Chen during a live interview and it didn’t go over well.
Most of the callers to 610 Sports Radio said it was a dumb mistake and Quintero should have used better judgement. Those upset say it was racially insensitive. Bruce Chen was doing a live interview in the dugout during Saturday night’s game in Pittsburgh.
Several players were messing with him, throwing things and making faces. Then, Quintero pulled the sides of his own eyes and that’s when the controversy came into play. However, Chen didn’t take it badly. He sent out a couple of tweets.
“Humberto is his friend and he was just pointing out one of his best attributes…is eyes,” Chen tweeted. He also tweeted, “He’s proud of his Asian descent.”
The Royals front office talked to FOX 4 about the incident on Monday.
“I know that Humberto regrets the fact that people were offended by it and he apologizes, but it was something that just happened,” said Toby Cook with the Royals. “Bruce laughed it off and said no big deal.”
The Royals received five complaints via email and responded to them. They consider the matter closed. Callers at 610 and most of the social media members appear to be over it as well.
The Royals are in Kansas City, but have the night off. They take on the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night.
