GREECE, N.Y. – According to indiegogo, an online fundraising website, a group of do-gooders has raised thousands of dollars for a woman berated by a group of kids.
Indiegogo reports that a group of Greece Athena Middle School kids in Greece, New York recently brought 68-year-old bus monitor Karen Klein to tears after bullying her.
Not only that – but they recorded it with a camera phone and posted their antics online.
Some boys demanded to know her address, saying they want to come to her house to perform sexual acts and steal from her. Another said, “you’re so fat.”
Klein appears to hold it together, until a students says “you don’t have a family because they all killed themselves because they don’t want to be near you.” Klein’s son reportedly died from suicide a decade ago.
Now indiegogo hopes to raise money to help the woman take a much needed break from school bus monitoring.
“Let’s give Karen a vacation of a lifetime. Let’s show her the power of the internets and how kind and generous people can be,” the fundraiser’s organizer said on the website.
The goal was to raise $5,000 over a 30-day period to send Klein on a vacation. The site raised more than $100,000 in just 24 hours. The current amount is nearing $200,000.
School officials and law enforcement say they are investigating the verbal attack.
“The Greece Central School District is committed to providing students and staff with a safe environment that respects the dignity of all,” the district wrote in an online statement. “We do not tolerate harassment of staff or students. While we cannot comment on specific student discipline, we can say that students found to be involved will face strong disciplinary action.”
