Different Day…Same Heat
I don’t even have a cute video for you today to try and make things a bit more bearable as you read through this soon to be stat heavy weather blog. Here is what I talked about this morning on FOX 4 News…
1) Yesterday the highest temperature in the world occurred in Al Dhafra, United Arab Emirates {UAE} with 118°. Yesterday the highest temperature in the USA was @ Norton Dam, KS in Norton County, KS near the lake there…118°. So yesterday the folks in W KS can clain that they tied the highest temperature in the world!
2) The last time it was this hot in JUNE was in 1988! We had 7 days with 100° or above including 6 days in a row from the 20th to the 26th. That summer we had 16 days with highs 100° or above. Interesting to note was the rainfall, or lack thereof,. In May and June that year we had 3.94″ of rainfall. That July and August we only had 2.17″ of rainfall. So far THIS May and June we’re at 3.32″ of rainfall (about 7″ below average). We’re DRIER now compared to 1988. FYI, in 1988 we had an impressive 8.5″+ of rainfall…mostly on 2 different days. Disturbing trends concerning the lack of rainfall.
3) Yesterday, St Louis broke their monthly June record high with 108°. That is their forecast for today. Here is a look at some of the other records that fell on Thursday.

Notice all the June records. Today many more are falling, especially in the SE part of the country. I think with 104° in Washington DC that they just broke their all time June record. Their all time ever record is 106°…hmmmm. Smyrna, TN is 108°. Columbia, SC is 107°.Atlanta has hit 100F for the first time since August 22, 2007.
All very impressive. As of this writing KCI is @ 99 and Downtown just hit 100° More to come today and over the next few days. Dewpoints are inthe low 60s which is pretty darn impressive for late June. Here is a map showing the 1PM temperatures…

What may break this run, clouds and slightly cooler air aloft. Tomorrow and Sunday may be days with some convective debris for leftover showers across far N MO and IA. Today we barely had a taste of some of them this AM. They quickly fell apart and thinned out in a matter of a couple of hours. Should they be somewhat thicker tomorrow or Sunday, we may be able to trim highs back into the 95-100° range. The air temperature just above the surface drops about 4° on Sunday…maybe that will be enough.
Whatever break we get is short lived, it comes roaring back by WED of next week, if not earlier with 100-108° likely (some might actually get hotter)
There are signs on the newest EURO that the extreme heat may back off sometime NEXT weekend as the ridge that’s dominating the weather across much of the country retrogrades and reorganizes across the Rockies, placing us in NW flow and allowing some weak fronts to move into the region bringing some cooler air from the Great Lakes towards us. The problem with that is it’s not a wet scenario for us.
That will do it for the day. Hopefully some better news tomorrow in terms of clouds and maybe some “less hot” weather.
