KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Police say they do not plan to recommend any charges be filed against the parents of a two-year-old boy who walked out of his house early this morning and was found by someone passing by.
The boy was found walking around without shoes and in his diapers at about 6:00 a.m. near 39th and Prospect Avenue.
About an hour later, the boy's parents called 911 when they realized their son was missing. Police say it appears he unlocked the front door of their home at 41st and Chestnut and walked out.
The place he was found is about four-tenths of a mile from his home.
The family was reunited and the child was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital to be checked out.
"I don't never leave my kids unattended. I would never leave my two-year- old wandering the streets," said Mattie, the boy's mom. "That's just crazy nonsense. But like I told the cop.. our door's in hand-reach so he can unlock and lock the door," she said.
The mother has three other children and she says she checked on them Tuesday night and they were all asleep.
Police say the child is not injured and they believe this was an accident. They say they were relieved it was a holiday and traffic was much lighter than it would normally be. They do not expect to recommend any charges to be filed against the parents.
