OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Fourth of July celebration at a local VFW post almost lacked some of its usual lackluster.
Post 846 at 88th and Grant was getting ready to put up the 15 flagpoles that usually line its driveway during patriotic holidays when they found they had been stolen.
They noticed last night that the flag poles were missing. They made some phone calls and five hours later, the flags were flying again. The post purchased replacements and worked to get them ready for the holiday.
The last time we had them up was Flag Day- June 14th so whoever took them did it within the last three weeks," said Jim Lilleston, the VFW Post Commander.
"We're large supporters of the troops at home, overseas and especially the community. That's what were here for. So just taking them is just despicable," said Chuck Santini of the VFW Post.
