Five Recovering From Shooting Outside Popular Restaurant
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — What started as a normal night of burgers and fries took a turn for the worst when gunshots rang out at a landmark Kansas City restaurant. Police say two women and three men are in the hospital after the Saturday morning shoot out.
Town Topic is a 24 hour burger joint where party goers often stop for a late night bite to eat. A regular at the restaurant says the early morning crowd was like any other day including the confrontation he witnessed until he heard gunshots.
Brett Ater is a regular customer at Town Topic. He was at the restaurant with a friend around 3 a.m. Saturday. He says it’s normal to see an argument at the restaurant.
“It’s kind of like the typical thing you see all the time going out people just getting in a shoving match,” Ater said. “We got our food and then we walked down the street and as soon as we turned the corner we heard the gunshots and we came running back. There was glass in certain areas and then there was two females one was underneath the truck and another was behind the truck and they were both bleeding pretty bad.”
Ater says one woman was shot in the arm and another woman was shot near her hip. Police say three men who were involved in the shooting and all five were rushed to area hospitals.
“Me and my friend went up to her and telling her to breathe and try to relax and she was doing the best that she could,” he said.
News of the early morning shooting caught Emily Shannon another regular off guard.
This would definitely be the last place I would expect something crazy like that to happen,” Shannon said.
Police say they’re working with area businesses to see if surveillance video will help them solve the case. They’re also interviewing the five people who were shot to try to piece together the cause of the shooting.
