Kids Get Special Experience Thanks to Royals Troopers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thousands of people go to the Royals home games every season but many never get to step on the field. Two boys whose dads are deployed to Afghanistan did that on Sunday. They even helped the grounds crew prep before the game.

Two boys were given a day they’ll never forget. 8-year-old Daniel Shepherd and 10-year-old Zack Shaver haven’t seen their dads in a couple of months because they’re in the military and stationed in Afghanistan. The next time they talk to their dads they will have quite a story to tell.

Aside from hanging out in the Royals dugout, the boys who are both from Ft. Riley got their hands dirty Sunday afternoon. And, they loved every bit of it.

“I watered the field and put in a base,” said Daniel Shepherd.

Shepherd and Shaver are part of the Royals Troopers. It’s a program started by Trevor Vance, the director of the Royals grounds crew.

“We started feeling sorry for our selves on a 6 game or 10 game home stand you know we are not having any time with our family,” Vance said. “But in the big pictures, these kids they’re the one that go six months or a year without seeing their parents because they are deployed all over the world.”

Vance says this is the third year the Royals has invited kids to help out on the field.

“This is pretty awesome,” Shaver said. “This is really, really cool!  I think my dad will be really excited right now and pretty proud of me. Mom, she’s  psyched, she’s doing everything she can right now to save this memory.”
