Royals Defeat Angels 4-1, Even Series

ANAHEIM, Calif. — A lights-out performance by rookie lefty Will Smith helped lead the Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Royals are now 3-2 against the Angels this season.

Kansas City (41-55, 24-25 away) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by center fielder Lorenzo Cain, his third HR since rejoining the club last week.

The Angels (53-45, 28-20 home) collected two hits in the first inning. They didn’t get another hit until the ninth.

Smith (2-3, 6.26 ERA) gave up one run on two hits in 7 innings, striking out four and walking four. In addition to having early run support, Smith also got a boost from the defense. The Royals finished the game with three double plays.

Smith was originally a product of the Angels’ farm system. He was traded to the Royals in 2010 with pitcher Sean O’Sullivan for third baseman Alberto Callaspo. Callaspo has been a daily fixture at third base for the Angels ever since.

Reliever Greg Holland (3.82 ERA) redeemed Monday night’s loss by tossing a scoreless eighth, and closer Jonathan Broxton (2.27 ERA) recorded his 23rd save.

Luke Hochevar (6-8, 4.91 ERA) takes the hill against Angels All-Star ace Jared Weaver (12-1, 2.20 ERA) on Wednesday afternoon for a game three rubber-match at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
