Election analysts are especially interested in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate; the winner will face Senator Claire McCaskill in November. Eight candidates are running; the top three are expected to be Sarah Steelman, a former Missouri state senator, Rep. Todd Akin from St. Louis and John Brunner, a new candidate. Steelman was endorsed by former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who came to Missouri last week to support her.

Other key issues before voters:

  • Missourians will vote on a constitutional amendment that would secure the right to pray in schools and other public and private places, including government buildings.
  • In Kansas City, voters will decide on whether to set aside $15 million in the budget for parks, rec centers and road improvements. Question 1 changes the tax code by discontinuing the assessment and collection of three different property taxes and prohibits the reinstitution of an annual (per) vehicle fee of $12.50 (which only Kansas City residents pay), and replaces that revenue with a 1/2 cent sales tax that is paid by everyone who shops in Kansas City, whether or not they are residents. With the sales tax, contributions from the City’s General Fund to Parks will no longer be required, allowing those funds to be dedicated to an expanded street maintenance and repairs fund, with a set minimum amount each year dedicated to that purpose.
  • The city is also looking ahead to the sewer repairs it is required to do by the federal government. This measure would permit the Water Services Department to issue $500 million in bonds to pay for $2.5 billion in sewer repairs.
