PLATTE CITY, Mo. -- Nineteen puppies and three adult dogs saw the light of day Wednesday, some perhaps for the very first time. The dogs were relinquished to the SPCA from an animal hoarder in Platte City who owns more than 40 dogs.

"I don't know how you couldn't be sad when you see dogs in a situation like what we saw today," said Rachel Hodgson, with Great Plains Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). "It was a small house. No air conditioning. No refrigeration."

Hodgson said the home where the animals lived was covered in urine and animal feces. The SPCA has offered to spay and neuter the dogs and take more of them in. About 19 remain at the home in Platte City.

"A lot of the dogs have never seen the sun, never been outside," Hodgson said. "They're covered with flea and tick issues, so it's really disheartening, so we are here to help."

Additionally, some of the animals are sick and malnourished but are now being treated with the help of the SPCA.

Most of the pets rescued will be ready for adoption next week.
