The Cyrano de Bergerac story goes through the Disney filter and is given a hip-hop twist in “Let It Shine,” a well-produced Disney TV channel movie musical.

“Let it Shine” is a throwback to that classic which provides a sweet literary foundation for this new Disney love story. Overall, the movie has youthful energy and a playful vibe. The story is a bit clichéd but never dull. What teen movie doesn’t scream about being positive, keeping it “real” and staying true to one’s self.but this one is better than most.

The talented cast and infectious music elevate this one above your average Disney product. While it will certainly appeal to its target audience of teens and preteens it’s entertaining enough to make it palatable for older audience members, too.
SHAWN
True. I was pleasantly surprised by “Let it Shine.” I really enjoyed it. This is no “Camp Rock.” and I really like the lead played by Tyler James Williams best known from the TV Show “Everybody Hates Chris.” It’s his solid performance that really elevates “Let It Shine.” He has charisma that’s very reminiscent of a young Will Smith. He plays the son of a pastor who be hatin’ on rap music. He thinks rap music is the devil’s music. But his kid is a musician. A superb musician. And he can rock the mic. Just a bit short on confidence. you know how this story goes. But it’s always fun.
RUSS:
While the drama is obvious, the cast seems to be having fun and the mood is infectious.
SHAWN:
Infectious in deed. However, the absence of extras is puzzling especially since this is a Disney release. Theonly bonus feature is a transferable digital copy, which provides the movie’s extended cut in iTunes format and two Windows Media files of different resolutions. But overall, this is solid family viewing and nice to see the Mouse House adhere to a little diversity.
