Chiefs Beat Cardinals 27-17 in Preseason Opener
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After scoring two touchdowns on their first two drives, the Kansas City Chiefs kicked off the preseason with a 27-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday night.
The Chiefs went on a 57-yard drive to start the game, and quarterback Matt Cassel found running back Peyton Hillis in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass. RB Shaun Draughn capped a 72-yard drive with a 4-yard TD run.
Hillis finished the game with 41 yards rushing on 4 carries. Jamaal Charles had 12 yards on 3 carries, and rookie Cyrus Gray gained 65 yards on 15 carries with a TD in the fourth quarter.
Arizona opened up the second half with an 80-yard TD drive, highlighted by a 67-yard run by RB William Powell. Powell also punched in a 2-yard TD run.
Many eyes of Chiefs fans were focused on QB play and the competition between backup QB’s. Cassel went 5-6 for 67 yards and a TD, and Brady Quinn was 7-13 for 81 yards and an interception. Ricky Stanzi completed 2-7 for 42 yards.
The Chiefs’ defense fared well, finishing with seven sacks. First round draft pick and rookie nose tackle Dontari Poe played a significant number of snaps, but failed to record any tackles or sacks.
Chiefs rookie wide receiver Devon Wylie had one kick return for 15 yards, and one punt return for 32 yards. Ryan Succop hit a pair of field goals under 30 yards.
Kansas City was 1-11 in their previous 12 preseason games entering Friday night’s preseason home opener.
Game two of the preseason will be against the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome on Saturday night in St. Louis.
