Restaurant Chain Helps Local Farmers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As the drought worsens, farmers across the country are struggling. But, closer to home, producers at the Brookside Organic Market say they’re doing okay.
For nearly a decade, the Crowther family has run a stand at the Brookside Organic Farmers Market. For brothers Luke and Josiah, only fresh, local ingredients can be used for their breads and cinnamon rolls.
“We get our grains locally, we get our eggs locally, we get as much locally and put into our products as we can,” Luke Crowther said.
Despite the drought, farmers at Saturday’s market say they’re having a good year. There has been a growing demand for everything sold at the market.
“I definitely wouldn’t speak for every single farmer but it’s been a really good year,” said Sara Dehart with Gibb’s Road Farm in KCK.
Saturday brought plenty of new customers to the market thanks to $10 tokens given away by Chipotle. The tokens were good for everything from the Brothers Bread to onions, garlic and tomatoes.
The first 250 people who went to Chipotle restaurants on Saturday received the $10 tokens. The chain says this year it’s committed to serving 10 million pounds of local produce in its restaurants.
