Chiefs Not Sharp in 31-17 Preseason Loss to Rams
ST. LOUIS — After an encouraging preseason opener last Friday, the Kansas City Chiefs took a couple of steps back on Saturday night, losing 31-17 to the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome.
The Rams opened up the game with a four-play 80-yard drive. Quarterback Sam Bradford connected with tight end Lance Kendricks for a 23-yard touchdown pass to take an early 7-0 lead.
On the Chiefs’ first offensive possession, wide receiver Jon Baldwin fumbled the ball, and the Rams took over at the Chiefs 31-yard line. Shortly thereafter, Bradford found wide receiver Danny Amendola for an 8-yard TD pass to give the Rams a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
Kansas City eventually answered with a 10-play 80-yard TD drive, capped with a 1-yard TD run by running back Peyton Hillis to cut the deficit to 14-7 in the second quarter.
The Chiefs hung around, but they lost the turnover battle big time. KC committed four turnovers, while the Rams committed none.
Chiefs QB Ricky Stanzi struggled mightily, completing 3-4 passes for 24 yards and one interception. He lost a fumble, and also got sacked three times for a loss of 32 yards. Both of Stanzi’s turnovers resulted in TD’s for the Rams.
Brady Quinn helped solidify his status as the Chiefs’ No. 2 QB, going 5-6 for 70 yards and a TD. Quinn found WR Jeremy Horne for a 38-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter.
The Chiefs look to improve when they take on the Seattle Seahawks at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday night for game three of the preseason.
