Campaign Aims to Keep Kids Out of Hot Locked Cars

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A new campaign is kicking off to remind parents about the dangers of leaving children in hot vehicles.

“Look Before You Lock” is a joint campaign from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and advocacy groups Safe Kids Worldwide and Kids and Cars, alog with Children’s Mercy Hospital.

According to statistics, at least 15 Missouri children have lost their lives to heatstroke from hot cars since 1998, and nationally 549 children have died in that time span.

Earlier this year, a child died after being accidentally left in a hot car by his mother in Lee’s Summit.

The new campaign – which brings together emergency medical technicians, local safety advocates, health professionals, and concerned citizens – aims to show parents just how hot a vehicle left in the sun can get.
