California Mayor Could be Replaced by Teen
FREEMONT, Calif. — A California teen is taking steps to make a difference in his community. Aziz Akbari is 18-years-old. He’s also running for mayor of his hometown of Freemont.
“I’ve been paying attention to local politics since I was about 10 or 11-years-old, so I know what’s been going on for the past few years and I know exactly what needs to be done,” Akbari said.
The teen’s social media campaign has received more than 16,000 page views. Akbari feels young people have been encouraged by his efforts and now they’re getting involved in the campaign or at least registering to vote.
“When someone has a passion, and they have that commitment, you just have to let them go with it. You just can’t take that away from them,” said Nisreen Akbari, Aziz Akbari’s Mother.
Akbari will face four other candidates who all hope to replace the departing mayor. Two of his competitors have served on the city council. Another, Anu Natarajan is an urban planner and the city’s vice mayor.
“I’ve got the experience. I’ve got the expertise,I’ve got the energy and the enthusiasm,” Natarjan said.
She’s never met Akbari but she says she’s glad to see a young person running for office.
“We have a lot of interest and tremendous amount of participation by the younger generation and that, to me, is a promising sign,” she said.
If Natarajan wins, she would also make history as Fremont’s first female mayor.
Akbari is the youngest person to run for city office in his town.
