KANSAS CITY –

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN (PG-13) -Universal
RUSS
They don’t call them the Brothers Grimm for nothing. The new cinematic adaptation “Snow White and the Huntsman is dark, gloomy and…well…grim. This overly violent fantasy plays more like a frantic horror flick than a fairy tale.

SHAWN
I loved the way they flipped this fairytale which plays more like “The Lord of the Rings” than the Disneyesque story most are familiar with. It’s violent albeit not bloody and although slow in spots seductively cool especially Charlize Theron who really digs in with a stellar performance.

RUSS
This impeccably produced near miss has terrific visual flair and atmosphere, but lacks emotional resonance. It may be rated PG-13, but probably deserves an “R” for violence.

SHAWN
It is well produced. So are the extras which include The Magic of Snow White and the Huntsman featurette which is really thorough.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING (PG-13) -Lionsgate

RUSS
An attractive and likable cast can’t make up for the sitcom silliness that dominates this ensemble comedy, If you saw “New Year’s Eve,” just picture the women pregnant, and you’ll know what you’re in for.

SHAWN
This movie is so bad. And I didn’t like the cast. And I don’t like movies where every character is stupid. Also doesn’t help that the script is poorly written and direction non-existant.

RUSS
To enjoy “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” you have to go in with low expectations.

SHAWN
This movie is so bad it could be used as birth control. The extras are also the equivalent of a dirty diaper. Overall this movie gives pregnancy a bad look.

TITANIC 3-D (PG-13) -Paramount

RUSS
James Cameron’s magnum opus “Titanic” returns, this time in a computer enhanced 3-D incarnation.  Is it corny? Yes. Is it melodramatic? Yes. Is it excessive? Yes…but “Titanic” is also a Hollywood spectacle of the highest order.

SHAWN
This is flat out a classic. Hard to believe that I used to hate on this spectacular movie. Still strongly believe it’s best viewed on the big screen. The biggest screen possible. But it’s been re-mastered and all cameroned up see even on DVD it’s super beautiful. Nodody does 3D better. But unless you rockin’ the latest #D home entertainment gear the experience on DVD just ain’t like going to the multiplex. And there isn’t close to enough time in this segment to break down the ginormous amount of extras you get with this release.

LOLA VERSUS (R) -Fox Searchlight

RUSS
Greta Gerwig stars in “Lola Versus,” a forgettable comedy about a self-involved Manhattanite who gets dumped by her fiancée. Gerwig will survive this misstep.

SHAWN
Not sure what happened here. But I didn’t enjoy this movie at all. This is one adventure not worth taking. Neither are the extras which are really basic.
