Widow Finds Out Late Husband Was Also Her Father
AKRON, Ohio — Valeri Spruill has never had the most straight-forward family tree.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Spruill found out at age nine that the man she thought was her father was actually her grandfather, and a woman who she knew as a friend of the family was actually her mother.
But that was nothing compared to what the now-retired 60-year-old grandmother found out from a DNA test – the man she was married to for several decades was, in fact, her father.
Spruill told the Beacon Journal that she had heard odd whispers from relatives for years, but didn’t find out the truth until several years after her husband – Percy Spruill – died in 1998 at the age of 60. She says that she suspects that he knew the truth. but was too afraid to tell her himself.
Spruill says that her mother became pregnant when she and Perce Spruill were both just 15. She was raised by her grandparents.
She says that she is sharing her story because she wants to forgive, but also in hopes that she can track down any other siblings that she didn’t know existed.
“I want this to be more of an inspirational story,” she told the Beacon Journal. “If I’ve come through this, anyone can come through anything through the help of the Lord.”
