Man Sentenced to 25 Years for Murdering Store Clerk
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 20-year-old man avoided life in prison Monday and will instead serve 25 years for the murder of a store clerk in May of 2011.
Anthony Britton was just 18 years old when he walked into Bledsoe Rentals at 50th and Prospect with a handgun, set to rob the place. Britton and another man, Andre Broadus, were wearing masks and shot and killed 50-year-old David Bledsoe.
Bledsoe’s brother was in the store with him. He told police that before Britton shot David, David told Britton he wouldn’t shoot him.
Instead, Britton pointed the gun at David’s chest and pulled the trigger.
Andre Broadus was also charged with the murder. Police say, after shooting Bledsoe, Britton and Broadus grabbed the cash and took off in a waiting car, driven by Britton’s grandfather.
Broadus was also found guilty and will be sentenced next month. Britton’s grandfather, George Britton, is facing only 15 years in prison because prosecutors say he cooperated and testified in this case. He will be sentenced later this week.
At his sentencing on Monday, Britton did not say anything to the family of Bledsoe, but they hope he thinks about David for the next 25 years.
“It’ll give him a lot of time to think about his quick moment of not giving my brother a chance, of thinking he needed money worse than saving somebody’s life,” said Terri Fike, David Bledsoe’s sister..
The judge ordered that Britton must serve at least 21 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.

:22 It wasn’t life but it seems like it’ll be long enough for us to reach our old age, that he can’t get out and hurt anyone.
:39 David always helped people in the neighborhood, he fixed equipment for people in the neighborhood so they could cut down their own trees, and he sharpened chain saws, even fixed lawn mowers.
1:19 I think it’s going to take me a long time to forgive him for what he’s done but eventually I’ll reach that point. I’m not there yet.
3:01 Maybe he’s not ready yet. I wish h would’ve said something but maybe he’s not ready yet.
