INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Authorities are searching for at least two suspects following an early-morning home-invasion robbery and shooting that left a three people dead in an Independence home.
According to police, two men broke into the home near Pope Avenue and Hereford Street around 4:30 a.m. and robbed, then shot and killed Maria Hernandez, 48, her son, Antonio Hernandez, 19, and Tomas Madrigal, boyfriend of Maria.
A fourth victim, identified by family members as a 16-year-old boy, was seriously wounded in the shooting, and taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
According to family members, several other children and adults were in the home at the time of the shooting.
Family members told FOX 4 that the gunmen burst into the home looking for drugs, but police would not confirm if drugs were involved in the shooting.
"It all points right now that this is not a random act of violence, it appears here that the motive was a residential robbery. All indications at this point indicated the victims and the suspects knew each other," said Capt. John Cato of the Independence Police Department.
Both suspects are described as males, one was stocky and wearing primarily read clothing, and the other was skinny and wearing mostly black or dark clothing. Both suspects had their faces covered.
Anyone with information in the shooting is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
