Cowboys Linebacker Dies in Alleged DUI Accident

IRVING, Tx. – Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jerry Brown Jr. died in an overnight car accident while riding with teammate Josh Brent. Brent was driving and arrested for intoxication manslaughter after it was learned that Brown Jr. had died as a result of the accident and officers had suspected Brent was intoxicated. Brown Jr. is the second NFL player to die in a week after Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher committed suicide after killing his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins last Saturday.

In a press release, Irving Police say that Brown Jr. was unresponsive on arrival and transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The report also says that Brent was driving at a high rate of speed and hit a curb that caused his vehicle to flip at least once before coming to a stop. Brent was responsive when officers arrived and asked to perform a field sobriety test, which in unison with their observations lead to Brent being jailed initially for driving while intoxicated. Brent faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if he is convicted on the intoxication manslaughter charge.

Brown Jr. attended Vashon High School in St. Louis before playing college football at the University of Illinois. According to his bio from the University of Illinois he was a Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscaster Association Class 5 first-team All-State player and PrepStar All-American at Vashon. He was on the practice squad with the Cowboys and had also spent time with the Indianapolis Colts during his NFL career.
