No. 12 Mizzou Stomps Tennessee St 68-38
COLUMBIA, Mo. — What started as a competitive game, turned into a blowout, as the 12th-ranked Missouri Tigers cruised to a 68-38 victory over the Tennessee State Tigers at Mizzou Arena on Saturday afternoon.
After several early lead changes, Missouri (8-1, 6-0 home) took a 23-20 lead on a three-pointer by senior forward Laurence Bowers before the break.
Mizzou opened up the second half with a 14-3 run. Tennessee State (4-6, 1-5 away) never posed a threat after that. Both teams were awful from beyond the arc. Tennessee State went 6-24 from three-point range, while Missouri went 5-19.
In spite of poor 3-pt shooting, Mizzou finished 45% from the field. The defense clamped down, and held Tennessee State to 23% shooting from the field.
Mizzou crushed Tennessee State on the boards 52-27. They did lose the turnover battle however, finishing with 19 turnovers to Tennessee State’s 12.
Bowers and senior forward Alex Oriakhi combined for a pair of double-doubles. Bowers finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Oriakhi added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Stefan Jankovic racked up 14 points and five rebounds off the bench in the second half.
Missouri takes on South Carolina State next Monday at Mizzou Arena.
