A blog- from FOX 4 Sports Director Al Wallace
Does it really take a trade in MLB for us to realize how long 27 years is?
That’s how long it’s been since the Royals played a nationally significant game in the month of October.
27 years. 1985.
That’s 10 years BEFORE George Brett retired, and 15 years before he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. He’s been a Hall of Famer now for 12 years. Since 1985 the Royals have had 27 opening days, MLB has had 27 All-Star games, and 27 off-seasons. Since 1985 the Royals have played in more than 4,300 Major League games, and none of them have been in the post season.
27 years in long enough. That’s why the Royals made a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, where top prospect Wil Myers was sent to Florida along with pitcher Jake Odorizzi and 2 other minor leaguers. In return the Royals got big league pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis.
The Royals made the trade because NOW is the time to win. Not when Myers is (maybe) ready to be a big time contributor in 2 or 3 years, and not when all the stars align in the baseball universe that say ‘roll the dice’ (again), and let’s see IF the Luke Hochevar’s of the world in their starting rotation are finally going to put it all together.
NOW, is the time.
The trade may not work out for the Royals, but we really won’t know that for a number of years, 2 minimum, 6 maximum, to see what Shields will yield, and just how good Myers and Odorizzi turn out. Trades like this take time. But 27 years is plenty of time to realize the Royals were in desperate need of pitching. And that’s what they got in Shields and Davis. No, they’re not the same as Verlander or Grienke or Sabathia, but few are. Making a trade like this and giving up 4 players/prospects that have never played one single innning of major league ball is well worth it. Myers has the potential to be very good. But I’m tired of hearing about potential. I prefer to hear about and see wins. More specifically, potential wins in October.
It’s been 27 years, and 2 years plus a quarter century is long enough.
