Lee’s Summit Teen Playing Pro Soccer in Spain
LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — Just six months after graduating from Lee’s Summit North High School, 18 year-old Jacole Turner has a contract with one of the best clubs in the world.
Two days before returning home for the holidays, Turner signed a two and a half year contract with Atletico Madrid, one of the top teams in the Spain’s top league, La Liga.
“It’s kind of surreal, it really. hasn’t really sunk in yet,” said Turner. “It’s just a privilege.”
Before leaving for Europe, Turner was a member of Sporting KC juniors for two years. Turner says he learned a lot in that program, but playing overseas was the ultimate goal. After playing in Croatia for a month, Turner earned a tryout with Atletico Madrid and made the team.
The European style is fast and smart according to Turner, he says he’s really had to step up his game.
“It’s like practicing your whole entire life and you’re going to take a huge test, you just have to use everything you’ve ever learned and just put it out there,” said Turner.
The 18-year-old says he can’t rule out playing in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States, but want’s to make his ultimate dream come true.
“It’s always been my dream to play for Manchester United, I’ve always said that since I was like 10 years old,” said Turner.
Right now, there are three other goalkeepers ahead of Turner on the depth chart, but he says he will continue to work as hard as he can to become a starter. Turner returns to Spain on January 4th.
