INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — The thumbs of the members of the Ft. Osage Scholar Bowl team are almost as fast as their brains. The five senior boys that make up the varsity team have already earned a spot in the national competition just halfway through the season.
When asked to describe the team, Cody New didn’t hold back.
“We are just a bunch of friends showing off how smart we are to other people,” said New.
Grant Watkins Davis, Alex Merithew, Glen Winfrey, Revan Hammontree and New have been on the same scholar bowl since 7th grade. Watkins says he enjoys the smart time with his friends.
“Just great bunch of guys, they are all my friends and we get along well. pretty smart I guess,” said Watkins.
Their coach, Joshua Malecki was actually their coach back in middle school and now is teaches at the high school.
“They were great in eighth grade, they won the conference tournament,” said Malekci. “All of these guys are all stars.”
The team says nationals was the season goal.
“At the beginning of the season we all told Mr. Malecki that our goal was to qualify for the national tournament, and it’s really been our goal since sophomore year,” said Merithew.
After finishing third out of 20 in a recent competition, the team did just that.
“It was awesome, yeah, it was really great,” said Winfrey.
The team doesn’t know at this point which location they will travel to in May for the tournament. It will either be in Atlanta, Ga. or Baltimore, Md.
