KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota recently contacted FOX 4 Medical Reporter Meryl Lin McKean about a patient from the metro. Messan Esse was returning here after receiving a rare heart and liver transplant, which he needed because of an inherited disease that was only diagnosed in 2011.

Messan says he's thrilled to have a second chance at life, but he is facing financial hardship.  His family is behind on mortgage payments because of his illness and the transplant.

In addition, Messan cannot live in the home now because it is older and has dust and dirt issues that increase his risk of infection following the transplant.

A fund has been established for Messan through the National Foundation for Transplants.  If you'd like to help Messan, go to patients.transplants.org/messanesse
