KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The abuse of prescription pain relievers is increasing among people of all ages. A new survey finds parents may not be as concerned as the should be about possible misuse or abuse by their kids.
The University of Michigan survey found that most families have had at least one prescription pain medicine in their home sometime in the last five years. Yet, only a third of parents said they were very concerned about misuse by children and teens in their communities, and only one in five was very concerned about misuse in their own families.
FOX 4 Medical Reporter Meryl Lin McKean talked with Tama Sawyer of the Poison Control Center at the University of Kansas Hospital who says that home is frequently where kids get the drugs.
