Jayhawks will wear unpopular, wild uniforms for one game for Adidas
LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Kansas Jayhawk team is one of six teams that will wear new uniforms from Adidas in the post-season tournament play.
However, the new uniforms are getting bad reviews. (“Nothing has been mocked on the Internet this badly….” said USA Today.)
Adidas said in a news release that the uniforms are designed to fit better and allow for more mobility. Adidas made the announcement, saying:
“Adidas today unveils the new eye-catching Adizero uniform system for six of its collegiate teams to wear during the 2013 NCAA basketball postseason. The uniforms feature Adidas’ most advanced uniform technologies and a limited-edition camouflage print designed to make an impact on the court.“
When asked about the uniforms in a news conference on Thursday, Kansas Coach Bill Self reassured fans that they wouldn’t wear them all throughout the tournament.
“As everyone here knows, Kansas tradition and history should be what is promoted for in our look and we’ve done that for years, but this is the one game or whatever that we will make that exception for Adidas,” Self said. “Sometimes you gotta be a team player and Adidas has certainly been good to us.”
And Elijah Johnson, a senior guard, made people chuckle when he said he was just going to do what he was told.
“I don’t think too much of them. They’re jerseys. At the end of the day.. you can’t go out there with no clothes on. so… that’s all it really is. If coach say put them on and go play, we gonna put ‘em on and go play, whether it’s a practice jersey, a new jersey, or an old jersey,” Johnson said.
USA Today calls the bold, sleeved jerseys “preposterous” and says the animal-striped shorts are a “lowlight.”
Baylor, Cincinnati, Kansas, Louisville, Notre Dame and UCLA will get them.
