River rescue efforts for man, woman end
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Despite efforts to stop them, a woman and man jumped from the Bond Bridge Thursday morning, and water rescue crews were called in to try to rescue them.
Rescue teams were alerted to the problem at about 11:30 a.m. when a truck was abandoned on the bridge. Witnesses told police that a man, a woman, and a baby went over the bridge. KCMO Police spokesman Steve Young said the woman was holding a blanket, but he could not confirm if a baby was wrapped inside it.
“Around noon today somebody said they witnessed people driving on the bridge. They stopped their vehicle on the bridge and a man and a woman got out and jumped,” Young said.
Firefighters with the water rescue team were searching the Missouri River and because of the swift current, quickly responded to the river under the Chouteau Bridge and the I-435 Bridge. They launched three boats to search the river and its banks. However, at about 1:20 p.m., they called off the search.
A fire spokesman told FOX 4 that when someone jumps off a bridge, they typically don’t resurface. They travel for miles underwater and are likely far down the river.
Police closed I-35 southbound at the Bond Bridge, but reopened it at about 12:30 p.m.
