The National Weather Service said the Mississippi River could reach up to 10 feet above flood stage by the middle of next week in parts of Missouri, Iowa and Illinois.
Three to four inches of rain is predicted in areas from Kansas City to Chicago by Friday morning. Saturated soil is showing the effects of an early, wet spring. In Chicago, a sinkhole swallowed three cars Thursday morning as rain continue to sprinkle.
With more rain expected, National Weather Service Hydrologist Mark Fuchs told the New York Times flooding could be notable in some areas.
“North of St. Louis, we’re looking at the kind of flooding we haven’t seen since 2008,” he said. Hundreds of homes were damaged in Iowa due to flooding that year.
