Man killed on highway he predicted would be dangerous during adventure

Richard Swanson

SEATTLE — A 42-year father was killed on a highway that he predicted would be very dangerous during a walking trip from Seattle, Wash. to Brazil that was supposed to take him months to accomplish.

Instead, Richard Swanson was killed after less than two weeks.

Swanson decided to walk 10,000 miles while dribbling a soccer ball because he loved soccer and wanted to see the World Cup in Brazil.

When he was laid off from his job, he decided there was no reason to keep him home, as his two sons were grown. Despite warnings from friends, Swanson decided he was up for the challenge. He created a website called Breakaway Brazil and updated followers on his trip there and on podcasts.

He set off from Seattle on May 1 but was killed walking on Highway 101 in Lincoln City, Oregon, struck from behind by a car.

He knew Highway 101 would be dangerous. Watch the video to hear what he said about the highway in an interview shortly before his death.
