OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The service Saturday to honor Lt. Justin Sisson  who was killed in Afghanistan last Monday by a suicide bomber, brought hundreds of friends and strangers out to honor him and his sacrifice.

On Friday, American flags lined the streets leading up to the church where services were held.

Members of the Patriot Guard, the motorcycle club whose mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes,  joined forces to protect the family from any potential protesters.

Lt. Sisson was a 2007 Blue Valley West graduate. He joined the Army after a stint in the National Guard where he deployed to Iraq and after graduating from Florida State University where he was a member of the ROTC.

Sisson will be laid to rest Saturday morning at Church of the Resurrection at 10. His burial follows at Leavenworth National Cemetery.

He will be laid to rest near his two grandfathers, the family said.

"I think we need to remember every day why we have the opportunity to live in this amazing country and to have the freedom that we do. and if it were not for our military, we would not be able to enjoy those things," said Jennifer Ross, a family friend. "We need to pray for them and just show them our gratitude."

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked memorial contributions be sent to the Florida State University Veterans Center Fund. To donate online, click here.
