RAYTOWN, Mo. -- A peacock has been taunting Raytown Animal Control for the past week.

The feathered fellow seems to like Robert Matlock's house in particular on East 70th Terrace near Raytown Road.

"Somebody drove by and stopped, came on knocking on my door and said there's a peacock out here. And so I looked out and said wow," Matlock said.

Some friends have told Matlock the peacock may be a visitor from way beyond.

"That it's my dad coming back to make sure the family is alright and everything," he said.

Matlock says he doesn't mind the bird all that much except for all the bird poop on his back deck.

"My back porch, back there, I got all peacock," said Matlock.

Raytown animal control has been out six times to catch the bird but the peacock always proves elusive.

"His trick is to act like a helicopter. It goes straight up in the air. We can have 5 people around it, have treats for it and that bird will go straight up in the air," said Raytown's Public Information Officer Brenda Gustafson.

If animal control does actually catch the peacock, they say they would take the bird to the zoo or to a conservation center.

But officers hope the peacock will simply get back on the migratory route.

Until then, he's the neighborhood star.
