OLATHE, Kan. — A fire killed two dogs and forced four families out of their apartments late Thursday night; thankfully their injuries are not serious.

Firefighters were called out to their building at about 11:30 p.m. near Ridgeview and Harold in Olathe.

Four families consisting of 11 people are now getting help from the Red Cross.

One woman was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

Firefighters say smoke alarms likely saved their lives.

“This could have turned out much worse,” Battalion Chief Bill Parker said. “The smoke alarms┬ásaved these people and everyone should make sure they have working detectors in their homes.”
