Sporting KC falls out of first place

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – For the second straight Saturday night, Sporting Kansas City hosted a club hot on their heels. A week ago, Sporting KC fell to Montreal Impact. Sporting lost again Saturday night. New York Red Bulls ran out to a two goal advantage and held on for a 3-2 victory at Sporting Park. With the win, New York hops over Sporting KC into first-place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings.

Another record-breaking crowd of 21,304 watched the Red Bulls pull away with a pair of goals early in the second half. Fabian Espindola’s strike in the 63rd minute gave New York a 2-1 lead. Six minutes later, Lloyd Sam fired a shot past Jimmy Nielsen to make it 3-1. Kei Kamara and Dom Dwyer scored goals for the home side.

Sporting open CONCACAF Champions League play on Wednesday, away to Nicaraguan side Real Esteli, before returning to MLS action at home against New England on Aug 10.
