Crews downsizing downtown lanes for streetcar project

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – It just got a $20 million boost in federal grant money this week. The planned two-mile streetcar system is coming and the city is getting it and drivers ready for it.

Crews worked downtown Saturday to turn a four-lane street into a two lanes.  Crews re-striped a block on Main St. from 11th to 12th streets.

But some people didn’t even notice.

“I don’t find it necessary by any means, I don’t see the difference really,” Rebecca Courtright, a KCMO resident said.

The city said these changes are needed to test traffic flow and prepare drivers for the two-mile streetcar line.  It’ll run from the River Market to Crown Center and is supposed to open in 2015.

“No offense but if they’re dumb drivers then I don’t think they’ll get it but you know common sense follow the signs, easy directions,” Courtright said.

“Hopefully they’ll know by then, you know what I’m saying?  They should, they should know,” Tony Olivieri, a KCMO resident said.

Some said the lines can be a little confusing.

“That line over there, it kind of makes it look a little different,” Ryan Moore, a KCMO resident said.

“It’s just all the weird markings on the street honestly, you know, don’t nobody know what’s going on. So you know that’s what’s confusing about it,” Olivieri said.

The city said it hopes that confusion will disappear as it gets drivers used to the changes early.  It said the changes don’t reflect all of how it will be when the streetcar is here, but it will give everyone a better sense.

Crews are expected to re-stripe lanes on Main St. between 9th and 11th streets on Sunday.
