Cheerleading: The most dangerous sport for young women?
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — According to research published in the Journal of Pediatrics, cheerleading is the most dangerous sport for young women.
Of all sports injuries, those suffered from cheerleading accounted for two-thirds of catastropic injuries to girls. The number of hospital visits for high school and college cheerleading injuries rose from just under 5,000 in 1980 to more than 26,000 in 2007.
So what’s being done to keep our daughters safe while cheering?
Dr. Greg Canty, the medical director for sports medicine at Children’s Mercy Hospital and Clinics and Holly Brucker, a local cheer coach, appeared on Wednesday’s FOX 4 Morning Show to discuss how to keep young cheerleaders safe.
